I don’t know why I keep buying these! I keep telling myself, “This is the last time!”

Okay, I think I really mean it this time.

I’ve lost all hope that the series will ever return to its original, entertaining premise of murders in a quaint old-fashioned English village with quirky inhabitants and a killer.

The best things I can say about this series are that the episodes are fairly evenly dull and boring.

As I mentioned in several of my previous reviews, there is simply no chemistry between members of the regular cast, there hasn’t been a truly engaging mystery or murder since I can’t remember when. As far as I’m concerned, the producers/directors/writers could get rid of Barnaby’s wife since they can’t really figure out anything to do with her except yoga. Get rid of the kid. Babies are kind of cute, sometimes, in small doses, but Barnaby’s child is not a baby anymore, the cuteness, personality wise, has worn thin and she is even more uninteresting than his wife. The dog is marginal – but he’s doing the best he can. He doesn’t have much to work with. I suspect he thinks his cast mates are dull and boring too. The medical examiner is quirky and fun, in small doses, but she certainly isn’t Dr. Bullard! How disappointing.

Need I say more?

Casting note: While Amazon.com lists series #21 as featuring John Nettles (Tom Barnaby), Jason Hughes (Ben Jones), Jane Wymark (Joyce Barnaby), and Barry Jackson (Dr. Bullard)…it in fact, does not. These episodes feature Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby along with Nick Hendrix as DS Jamie Winter.

4 episodes in this series:

“The Point of Balance” - Rival dancers, jealous partners, and suspicious corporate sponsors complicate DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winters investigation when a former ballroom-dance champion is found dead. (93 minutes)

“The Miniature Murders” - A real-estate agent is shot at the unveiling of a museum’s new miniature dollhouse collection. (93 minutes)

“The Sting of Death” - A master beekeeper is injured trying to apprehend a thief. DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter are called to investigate and the case quickly expands when one of the locals is stung to death. (93 minutes)

“With Bated Breath” - Participants in a fishing competition and an extreme obstacle course tangle with each other, sabotage each other’s events, and it’s not long before someone’s life is in danger. (93 minutes)
